OUR HISTORY, From Vision to Reality 
Moved by the dire plight of unemployed youth and the underprivileged in Cameroon, Chief A.E. Kome was stirred to bring the Opportunities Industrialization Centers (OIC) movement to his homeland. With the encouragement and support of Dr. Theresia Elad, Chief Kome embarked on this ambitious journey on August 2, 1982. He formally applied to OIC International in Philadelphia for permission to establish a branch in the Republic of Cameroon.
In response, Roland Howard, Director of Operations for OIC International, visited Cameroon in November 1982. He held a significant meeting with a diverse cross-section of the Cameroonian population at the Youth and Animation Center. The positive reception and deliberations at this meeting highlighted a strong interest and need for OIC’s mission in Cameroon.
The next critical step was to obtain the approval of the Cameroon Government. However, this was not an immediate process. The government needed time to scrutinize and understand the project thoroughly. Despite this, Chief Kome’s resolve remained unshaken. With relentless determination and the strategic support of Dr. Theresia Elad, he reached out to key personalities in Yaoundé and Buea, advocating for the OIC initiative.
Among the influential figures who supported this cause were: David Abouem a Tchoyi, then Secretary General at the Presidency, Hon. Minister Sadou Hayatou, Hon. E.T. Eabe, Dr. Solomon Nfor Gwei, Bishop Pius Suh Awah, Rev. Nyasako-Ni-Nku, Mr Akoto Ndang, Ambassador Henry Fossung and Hon Peter Ikundi.
Between 1982 and 1986, thirteen inter-ministerial meetings were held to deliberate on the OIC proposal. This period was marked by intense lobbying and strategic discussions. Finally, on June 26, 1986, the Cameroon Government officially approved and signed the protocol agreement with OIC International, marking the formal establishment of Cameroon OIC.
Since its establishment, Cameroon OIC has grown to become an inspiration of hope and empowerment for many Cameroonians. The center has successfully implemented programs that provide vocational training, education, and entrepreneurial skills, significantly reducing unemployment and improving the livelihoods of countless individuals.
Cameroon OIC’s commitment to its mission is reflected in its continued efforts to innovate and adapt to the changing needs of society, ensuring that it remains a vital resource for the community. Through partnerships, dedicated staff, and a clear vision, Cameroon OIC continues to expand its impact, embodying the spirit of its founders and the dreams of those it serves.
The Centre has had six(6) successful board chairpersons: Dr Mrs Theresa Elad, E.K. Lottin, S.E. Becke, Barrister Ekontang Elad, Mr Ekeke, Hon Meoto Paul Njie, and Barrister Mafany Namange.
